This tool reports listing status, and only listing status. Schedule 1 to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 is that Act's list of toxic substances. Whether a listed substance carries any further obligation depends on instruments made under the Act, not on the schedule — this tool reports none of them and does not tell you that anything applies to you. Schedule 1 carries no CAS numbers.It identifies substances by name, description or molecular formula, so matching here is name-based and every match is name-level: read the entry text and decide whether it covers your substance. Any CAS association shown on a result comes from ECCC's separate substance mapping, which ECCC states is non-exhaustive — which is why a CAS that finds nothing is reported as No CAS association, never as a clean "Not found".
These results are list-membership facts as of the dated copy of each list identified on the result. Absence from these lists is not evidence of safety or of regulatory non-applicability. Safety Data Sheets and the primary source lists remain authoritative.

How it works
This tool screens a single substance — by name or by CAS number — against a dated copy of Schedule 1 to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The copy used here is canada.ca Schedule 1 page as captured 2026-08-01. It screens that schedule and nothing else: no other jurisdiction, no other Canadian inventory, no other list.
Because the schedule carries no CAS numbers, the authoritative path is the name. Matching is exact, never fuzzy, and runs against a matchable substance name derived from each entry — the statutory wording of an entry often wraps the substance name in a clause ("…, which has the molecular formula …"), and matching the raw wording would miss almost every such entry. The full verbatim entry text is always shown on the result, so what you read is what the schedule says.
A CAS query still works: it resolves to a substance identity first, and that identity is then matched by name. It can additionally hit ECCC's published substance mapping, which associates CAS numbers with schedule entries — that mapping is explicitly non-exhaustive and is treated as supporting evidence, never as the identity of an entry.
Four verdicts are distinct and are never collapsed into each other:
- Name-level match — the substance matches an entry by name. The entry is shown verbatim with its part and item number. Every direct Schedule 1 match is name-level, by construction: the schedule has no CAS numbers to be exact about.
- Associated— no name match, but ECCC's mapping associates the CAS number with one or more entries. Positive and attributable, and shown with the entry it came from.
- No CAS association — a well-formed CAS number that nothing in the reference data can identify. Never green: class entries may still cover the substance, and the correct next step is to screen by name.
- Not found — a substance the tool could identify, whose name matches no entry on this dated copy. That is a fact about one schedule on one date, not a safety conclusion.
The result states exactly which dated copy was used and links the official source. The schedule is amended by order — the published consolidated text is always authoritative.
Worked example
Searching Benzene returns a Name-level match on Part 2, item 22, shown with the schedule's own wording: Benzene that has the molecular formula C6H6. Searching 71-43-2 reaches the same entry — the CAS resolves to the identity, and the identity matches by name. ECCC's mapping carries no CAS for this entry at all, which is exactly why the name path is the authoritative one.
Searching Chlorobiphenyls returns Part 1, item 1, whose entry text is a class definition — Chlorobiphenyls that have the molecular formula C12H(10-n)Cln in which "n" is greater than 2 . The tool tells you the entry matched; it does not tell you whether your particular congener satisfies the formula. That reading is yours.
Searching 1763-23-1 (PFOS) returns a Group listing: the substance is not itself an entry, but it is a member of Part 1, item 11, Perfluorooctane sulfonate and its salts, per the curated group-alias table. The group entry is named so you can check it yourself.
Searching a checksum-valid CAS number that appears in none of the reference data returns No CAS association — amber, not a green Not-found. ECCC's mapping is non-exhaustive, so an unmatched CAS is an absence of evidence, and the tool refuses to present it as evidence of absence.
