How it works

Precautionary statements are the standardized P-code phrases assigned under the UN Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). Each code gives a specific handling, storage, or response instruction tied to a substance's classified hazards — general (P1xx), prevention ( P2xx), response ( P3xx), storage ( P4xx), and disposal ( P5xx).

P-codes appear on chemical labels and in Section 2 of a safety data sheet alongside the hazard statements, pictograms, and signal word. Some codes are combined into a single statement (e.g. P301 + P330 + P331) when the source tables specify a joined phrase for that combination of responses.

This is a reference table, not a label generator: it looks up existing P-codes and their fixed wording, it does not select which codes apply to a given classification.

Worked example

A safety data sheet lists P210 and P280 in Section 2. Searching each code in the table above shows:

  • P210 — Prevention — "Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking."
  • P280 — Prevention — "Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection/hearing protection/..." — the trailing slashes mark supplier-selectable PPE options, per the notation legend.

Together they tell you to keep the product away from ignition sources and to select and wear the appropriate protective equipment while handling it.

Eight codes deleted at Rev.10 are not carried. Slashes mark supplier-selectable alternatives, square brackets mark optional text, and ellipses mark text the supplier must complete; all three are part of the official text and are rendered verbatim.
